Track League season starts Tuesday

Meadowbank track league will start on Tuesday 7th May.

The extended cold start to the year has delayed  the work to repair and prepare the track for this season, which has delayed the opening of track league. Tosh and his team have worked extremely hard to complete all necessary work to make the track safe to use.

Track league entry fees for 2013 shall be:

Seniors £8 per week
Juniors £6 per week
Youths £5 per week

Season tickets offering significant discounts are also available and can be signed up for on the Season Ticket page.

Meadowbank Track League season start delays

The first two weeks of Meadowbank Track League for 2013 (16 and 23 April) have had to be cancelled as the pre-season maintenance work has been delayed in completion. Work is now progressing well with a ‘deep clean’ of the track surface taking place to ensure the build up of moss  in recent years is eliminated.

A further announcement on the start date of the 2013 track season shall be made shortly.

Sir Chris Hoy calls on Edinburgh Council to provide covered velodrome

Sir Chris Hoy yesterday (18 April 2013) called upon the City of Edinburgh Council to continue to work towards replacing the aging velodrome at Meadowbank with an indoor covered training facility in the city.

Announcing his retirement from competitive cycling, Britains most successful Olympian, reflected upon the impact the local cycling facility in Edinburgh had on sending him on his way towards Olympic glory.

“Whilst it’s amazing to have this multi-million-pound facility in Glasgow, you don’t want to forget Meadowbank. I’d not be here without that facility,” he pointed out. “It’s not like we are asking for a similar facility to Glasgow here in Edinburgh, but somewhere to train the elite riders which the school groups can come and use, a roof over a tin shed – that’s all they need.

“All the potential athletes’ parents are not going to make an hour journey to go to the velodrome [in Glasgow] two or three times a week on the off chance their son or daughter will enjoy it.

“Elite athletes will travel, but to make it attractive to potential cyclists . . . well, it’s not rocket science. Fingers crossed Edinburgh will continue to work on it.”

Edinburgh Council announced in February this year that they were embarking on a feasibility study to provide a cycling track at the Jack Kane Centre, Craigmillar, although it is thought that this is to be a large outdoor concrete track which is unlikely to fulfill the requirements for track cycling in Edinburgh. Hopefully the sound words of Sir Chris Hoy will be be heard in the City Chambers and the current plans amended to provide a basic indoor training facility.
